This Week's Prayers
(Meditation: I Corinthians 13:4-7)
God, I thank You for my family, that group of friends who are never happier than when we're together. We are like flowers of different scents, together making a bouquet of loving support. Each family gathering is a celebration of other times together, never forgotten, times prized in the retelling -- sacramental times. We sing familiar songs, songs made more joyous by the vigor of children's voices, somehow sensing that they are strengthened by the songs of belonging, the songs of love. Thank you for my family, for our shared pains, and tears, and laughter, and joy. God, You made us; You love us; You set us in families. Blessed be Your holy name! Amen.
(Meditation: John 16:33)
God, when people turn their lives over to You, they still face problems. Their children still get into trouble. They still have pain and suffering. I know that Christians aren't shielded from the problems of life, yet I know that they can deal with these problems because of their faith and trust in You. God, I'm grateful for Your grace that gives them wisdom and comfort in dealing with the slings and arrows of life. Though You do not lead us AROUND problems, I am grateful that You do lead us THROUGH them. Great is Your faithfulness! Amen.
(Meditation: Lamentations 3:19-24)
God, I pray for Muslims who blame outside "infidels" for their plight. God, replace their challenges with opportunity, mistrust with tolerance, and fear with love. Amen.
(Meditation: Romans 12:1-2)
Heavenly Father, You grant peace and joy through holy habits . . . the habit of prayer . . . the habit of giving . . . the habit of studying Your Word . . . the habit of helping someone else . . . the habit of quiet reflection. God, these aren't natural habits with me -- I do them in fits and starts. God, help me to maintain holy habits. In Jesus' name. Amen.
(Meditation: Psalm 111:10)
Dear God, I pray for children as they begin the school year, especially for little ones who will be away from their mothers for the first time. I pray for college students, especially for those who will be on their own for the first time. I pray for teachers, especially for those who will teach for the first time. I pray for school administrators and staff, especially for those who will have new responsibilities and challenges. I pray for legislators, and city council members, and school board members, especially for those who serve for the first time. And I pray for parents, and donors, and benefactors. God, bless the great fellowship of teaching and learning with truth and high moral values. I pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
